In a desperate search for a new anime, I asked one of my Otaku friends for a suggestion. I asked for an anime with action, good animation and a good story. Well... at least it had the first two.
Tokyo Majin is the story of 5 kids and how they ended up with "extraordinary" powers called The Dragon Veins; they got their powers by walking into a haunted house in the middle of the night (doesnt make sense to me either), allowing them the power to fight the demons that are being unleashed upon the world by a Mama's boy having a tantrum... pretty much. Turns out the main bad guy lost his mom a long time ago when another tribe killed her for belonging to another. Ever since then hes been training with the "Dark Law"; which pretty much just another word for Black Magic, and eventually became powerful enough to take the evil inside you and make it control you. Using that power he takes people off the streets of Tokyo and makes them into super evil/powerful monsters, which the kids are forced to fight and kill.
I put extraordinary in quotations because I was exaggerating, the powers arent that... powerful, and theyre basically just plain unimaginative. Like the GLOVE OF STRENGTH, or the ENDLESS WHIP, or how about the MAGIC FIRE BOW, what about the GLOWING WOODEN SWORD OF POWER and even still a character with the ability to make barriers and heal people... All very unoriginal and all very boring when you see them in action. Yet sadly the action scenes are the best part of the show. With some better powers, this show could have been a lot better, especially since the animation of the show itself was impressive.

If having a bad guy whos main motive is to impress his dead mother wasnt enough, we also have his equally "wtf-ish" sidekick, SpazGirl! Her power is to go from cute loli to explosive (literally) serial killer in no time flat, its like an episode of Higurashi on crack. The main characters are youre average goodytwoshoes, best friend of that goodytwoshows, the strong yet silent character, the "Badass" delinquent and the muscular guy. Yup, all mediocre character types accounted for... whats that you say? Still need a "Nosy/Quirky" character? No problem, weve got her as well. Theres a bratty paparazzi girl who works for the school newspaper, so no problems there. If anyone finds some odd reason to continue watching this anime, theres a second season that was released last month, I havent seen it, nor do I plan to... ever.

Not bad. Considering some other shows Ive seen, this ones animation is pretty well done. Its just everything else thats the problem...

Final Comments: Good Animation; but the bad story and characters made it almost a chore to watch.
