Tengen has the most reviews on NK for a reason, the rise and decline of the series has left me with the most to talk about out of all the series I’ve been watching. It started off as one of the most amazing animes I’ve ever seen, and quickly fell into a slump, especially after the time skip from episode 17 onwards. It hasn’t felt like Tengen in such a long time, I feel like I’m watching something completely different, and that something different was bad. Characters once loved become evil and characters once evil become loved, some simply disappeared to come back later with new outlooks on life. I miss the original Gurren Brigade, where people who were once forced to live underground banned together and fought as one, sharing the same feelings and outlooks to fight back against the ones who took their freedom. I miss the comedy and fan service that once filled each episode so that it made you love the characters even more with each episode. I miss the corny inspiring yells that would make the characters realize what they were fighting for, and turn the battle around at the very last second. Since episode 17 and onward I hadn’t seen any of that. The series turned very serious, no more comedy or fan service, the inspiring yells were gone, and yells of negativity replaced it “Come back, you can’t win this battle” was something I never thought I’d ever hear being broadcast across the Gurren channel. It was as if everyone had simply forgotten what happened in the past, and now doubt filled their minds. The Gurren Brigade was dead, as far as I was concerned, but episode 22 aired, and I felt a familiar feeling in the pit of my stomach that reminded me of what I felt while watching some of the earlier battles of Tengen, there wasn’t any funny moments or fan service, but there was fighting spirit and corny battle cries, and rekindled a kind of hope for me.

His Fightinhg Spirit Is Destoryin Teh Enemies? That Means...
ITS OVER 9000!!!!
Taking the battle to outer-space to stop the falling moon and protect all those people who had evacuated in the battleship, the Gurren Brigade finally came together once again, the same familiar faces fighting for what they believed in against “impossible” odds. More explosions then stars filled the sky, and Simon tore off towards the moon as his comrades protected the battleship behind. Only three words can summarize the entire episode, and I think they do so quite well.
“About fucking time”
Everyone I know who watches Gurren Lagann had only bad things to say about the new episodes, and I reluctantly agreed. Yet episode 22 reminds us why we fell in love with Tengen in the first place, the epic battles and feelings of bravery portrayed even in the midst of battle. Episode 22 might be the flag point for the series to get back on its feet, maybe the writers finally woke up from their comas and shooed the emo-monekys away from their computers and said “OMFG, WE NEED TO MAKE IT PWN AGAIN” I honestly have my hopes up for the next episode, if its anything like this episode, Im sure ill love it.

Don’t give up on Tengen yet, it’s not over. Besides, what the hell do you think you’re watching? TENGEN TOPPA GURREN-LAGANN!
